Maximizing Your Job Search Campaign: The Intersection of Passion, Skills and the Marketplace
- Are you tired of spinning your wheels in your job search process?
- Do you feel you’re not optimizing your energy output?
- Are you getting results? (networking contacts, job leads, etc)
Perhaps stepping back to do a quick exercise and Venn diagram would be a wise move to guide your job search. Sounds too mathematical for you? Not to worry- this is very simple- and as they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
- Draw a circle, and label it “Passions”
- Draw a second circle that intersects with the first circle and label it “Skill Sets”
- Draw a third circle that intersects with the other two circles and label it “Marketplace”.
- The space in the center-the intersection of all three overlapping circles is what’s called “Your sweet spot- or ideal job”
- If you have a job that fits your skill sets but you’re not passionate about it, then it’s just “a J-O-B”.
- If you are seeking a job that just fits your passions, and not your skill sets, you will be searching a long time, because hiring managers are most interested in people with the right skill sets.
- If you are seeking a job that suits your passions and skill sets, but there is no demand for those skills or passions in the marketplace, this will become your hobby, because you won’t be able to earn a living doing it.
- In essence, your ideal job is a solid match with who you are, what you do well, and what the marketplace needs.
***So be sure you spend most of your time and energy focusing on your sweet spot. It will be a solid return on your investment.
